It’s that time again when you wave off one year and toast in the next. New Year’s Eve can be a total flop (sorry Jools Holland, but your Hootenanny is a slippery slope to midnight misery). The good thing is that if you are in or near Cardiff there are plenty of things going on to ensure that your 2015 gets off to a brilliant start. Here are just some of the things that are destined to be fun for NYE 2014.
The annual Calennig event – which translates from Welsh as ‘New Year celebration’ – is a traditional, free and family friendly place to be. Outside City Hall, there are plenty of fun things to keep Cardiffians entertained. There is a family funfair that runs until 1am, live music in the outdoor arena, food, drink and more.
It’s worth going just for the impressive fireworks display at midnight; while it’s no London display, it’s still spectacular to watch and an opportunity to cosy up. If you book in advance, you can even skate in the new year at Winter Wonderland (we hit the ice last week and highly recommend it).
Chapter Arts Centre
The best arts venue in Cardiff is hosting its own extravaganza for those who fancy something slightly away from the anarchy of the city centre. With an evening of live music from the acclaimed Shape Records and sets from the hip and happenin’ likes of Bass Clef and Macho City, a free glass of bubbly and some nibbles, this will be a party for those who like a good time but don’t necessarily want to end the night shouldering for a greasy kebab on Chippy Lane at 3am.
10 Feet Tall
A good night is usually had at this venue regardless of the time of year, but this NYE looks set to be out of this world… and into Wonderland. Its Mad Hatter’s Cocktail Party promises three floors of dancing, drinking and nibbles, live jazz, more gin than is imaginable and specially crafted Alice In Wonderland inspired cocktails. Entry is a mere £4 – that’s 40 pence per potential hour of partying!
Ten points to anyone who pulls together a costume for this in time – Gwdihw is holding another fancy dress party to top all fancy dress parties. This year’s theme, heroes and villains, is a great excuse to channel your inner powers and transform into something superhuman. The best outfit gets a free bar tab all night, so get crafting!
Those who can’t be bothered to create an alter-ego can still enjoy the night here thanks to top class DJs, yummy drinks and the venue’s typical party atmosphere.
There are a handful of prohibition-themed parties taking place, namely at Revs De Cuba, Ladybird and Lab 22. The latter is the most expensive at £40 a ticket, but all three are a chance to don your 1920s inspired glad rags, sip on classic cocktails and swing dance the remainder of the year away in vintage style.
We hope you all have a fantastic New Year’s Eve 2014. Thanks for following us this year – it really means a lot to us.
ROLL ON 2015! We promise to bring you all sorts of blogging excitement in the new year!
